When Tradition Replaces God (Mark 7:1-23)
Introduction
The passage confronts the idea that doing right makes us right with God. Over time, this becomes traditions that appear spiritual. Jesus shows it is not external actions, but what He does in the heart that cleanses.
1. The danger of a tradition-centered religion (vv. 1-5)
The Pharisees judge based on tradition, not sin.
Traditions become rules defining spirituality.
This creates external faith while the heart is far.
Even rejecting traditions can form new ones. The issue is when Christ is not central.
2. The problem of replacing the Word of God (vv. 6-13)
Jesus shows they honor God with words, but not with their hearts.
They elevate human traditions above God’s Word.
Corban shows spiritual language can hide disobedience.
We can do right things but trust ourselves instead of Christ.
3. The root problem: the human heart (vv. 14-23)
The issue is not external, but the heart.
What comes out reveals inner sin.
We cannot cleanse ourselves.
Christ alone cleanses and gives new life.
Conclusion
You can be close to religion and far from God.
It is not external actions, but Christ who transforms.
Only He can make the heart new.
