The Works of Christ (Mark 7:24-8:10)
Introduction
The passage shows that Christ is completely sufficient to save, transform, and sustain His people. Jesus extends grace to the unworthy, gives life to the incapable, and multiplies what is insufficient. These stories reveal how Christ works powerfully in the midst of human need.
1. Grace given in advance (vv. 24–30)
Jesus travels into Gentile territory where a Syrophoenician woman approaches Him with humility and faith. She recognizes that she deserves nothing, yet trusts that even the crumbs from Christ are enough. Jesus extends His grace to the Gentiles and heals her daughter. Salvation and grace come through faith and humility, not human merit.
2. A creative miracle (vv. 31–37)
Jesus heals a man who is deaf and has a speech impediment. With the word “Ephphatha” (“Be opened”), Jesus opens his ears and tongue. This miracle displays Christ’s creative power and reveals that He came to reverse the effects of sin. Just as He opened that man’s ears, Christ also opens spiritually closed hearts to the Gospel.
3. Divine sufficiency (vv. 8:1–10)
Jesus feeds a large crowd with only a few loaves and fish. The disciples once again doubt, forgetting how God had already provided before. Jesus multiplies what little they have and everyone eats until satisfied. Christ proves that He is sufficient and that His provision never fails.
Conclusion
Christ seeks surrender, not perfection. He extends grace to the unworthy, transforms the incapable, and sustains the needy. Jesus alone is sufficient to save, transform, and fully satisfy humanity.
