The Authority of the Son of Man (Mark 2:1-12)

Introduction

We live in a time when authority is often viewed negatively. However, in Mark 2:1–12, Jesus reveals an authority that liberates, restores, and forgives. He demonstrates divine authority not only to heal bodies but also to forgive sins. The central question is: Under whose authority are we living?

1. An authority that draws us

Jesus attracted crowds through His authoritative teaching and miracles. People came out of curiosity, need, or because the Father was drawing them. The paralytic came with a physical need, but Jesus addressed his deeper need—the forgiveness of sins. True attraction to Christ leads to salvation.

2. An authority that confronts the heart

When Jesus declared forgiveness, the scribes accused Him of blasphemy. Jesus exposed the hardness of their hearts. The gospel confronts, reveals our condition, and calls us to repentance. Religious knowledge alone is not enough; a humble and surrendered heart is necessary.

3. An authority that forgives and restores

Jesus confirmed His divine authority by healing the paralytic, showing that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. This miracle points to His identity as the eternal King prophesied in Daniel 7. Christ’s authority transforms the soul and grants entrance into the Kingdom of God.

Conclusion

Jesus’ authority produced amazement and glory to God. That same authority remains today. There are only two options: live under Christ’s authority, which gives life and forgiveness, or remain under the authority of sin. Jesus calls for repentance, faith, and submission to His authority as we carry out His mission.
